Track and field pundits believe it will be a showdown between many times champions Kingston College (KC) and Jamaica College (JC) at the 2023 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ Athletics Championship currently underway in Jamaica.

The championships started on Tuesday March 28 and will run until Saturday April 1 at the National Stadium in Kingston.

There is also heightened anticipation in the girls category which will see defending champions Edwin Allen High defend their title against Hydel High School who have improved their standing year after year.

Leaford Grant, head coach of the defending champions KC, has been favoured to retain the crown against the Neil Harrison-coached JC, who last won the championships in 2021.

The boys of North Street, KC, secured 372 points in 2022 to seal the victory.

The Clarendon based Edwin Allen came out victorious with 352 points.

JC secured their first points of the 2023 championships today after Michael Andre Edwards won the class two long jump in 7.29m.

Another highlight on day two came from the class one girls 1500m finals with a record run from Jody Ann Mitchell of Holmwood Technical High in 4:29.42 minutes.

Thirteen finals will be contested on Wednesday, highlighted by the coveted 100m sprint.

The ISSA boys and girls championship is the most popular track and field high school spectacle in the western hemisphere.

The competition over the years have seen notable performances including record breaking runs from the likes of youth stars turned pro Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shelly-Ann Frazer Pryce.
